If you run stables, which hire out horses or ponies for riding or instruction, you must get a licence from the local authority.

Determining the length of Licence and Star Rating.

A Licence will be issued with a star rating dependant on welfare standards and risk. The Licence will run for a period of one, two or three years dependant on the score issued.

A BUSINESS WITH A LOWER STAR RATING IS NOT NECESSARILY ONE THAT HAS POOR STANDARDS. THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT ARE CONSIDERED WHEN SCORING A PREMISE. These include the length of time the licence holder has been operating. This means that new businesses will be assessed as slightly higher risk simply because there is no compliance history.
