Oak Tree warms to new heating system

Things are hotting up on the Oak Tree Lane estate, following the installation of over a thousand new boilers into residents' homes.

Mansfield District Council worked with British Gas, Npower and National Grid Affordable Warmth Solutions (NGAWS) to replace all three coal-fired district heating systems on the estate, which previously heated 1,097 homes. Each property, including the homes of private tenants and landlords, was provided with individual, energy efficient gas boilers, new pipes and radiators.

The new heating system can be individually controlled and will help to reduce the District's CO2 emissions by over 10,000 tonnes, as well as reducing the Council's costs for maintenance and operation of the system. The overall contribution of the Council is just under £500,000 for a scheme worth around £6 million.

During the conversion work, which began in April this year, National Grid Affordable Warmth Solutions (NGAWS) working in partnership with J Murphy & Sons Ltd laid 8,507 metres of gas pipeline and fitted 1,090 gas connections - all on time. The gas works were completed free of charge through NGAWS fuel poverty funding.

Cllr Mick Colley, Portfolio Holder for Tenancy Services and Housing Needs at Mansfield District Council, said: "I am delighted that this scheme has been completed on time and to such a high standard. Residents of the Oak Tree Lane Estate now have an efficient and more reliable heating system under their own control. Some customers are already making large savings on their heating bills, compared to the previous district heating charges.

"I would also like to congratulate all the contractors and Mansfield District Council officers for their excellent achievement. So far, we have received a 97% satisfaction rate from residents, with all contractors being highly praised for their work."

Work on the scheme is now complete and each of the new systems has a one year warranty from the date of installation with the supplier, who carried out the work.

The gas suppliers are British Gas (866 properties) and Npower (231 properties).
