Thousands flock to Mansfield's Big Switch On

Mansfield Town Centre was a hive of activity yesterday (Sunday 19 November) when thousands of people came to enjoy a day of festive activities culminating in the town's Christmas lights switch on.

During the day families enjoyed a range of arts and crafts workshops provided by Four Seasons Shopping Centre and Mansfield Library.

Children also saw Santa and his reindeer, Dancer and Prancer, as they paraded along Westgate followed by the Palace Theatre's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs pantomime characters, CBeebie's Driver Dan from Driver Dan's Story Train and the Four Season's B:Club mascot Buzz the Bee.

Local school choirs and a brass band provided festive music for shoppers on Stockwell gate.

At 3.30pm the main stage show was opened by Mansfield's Executive Mayor Tony Egginton, Youth Mayor Jessica Wells and Miss Mansfield and Sherwood Forest Alice Kurylo.

The 40 strong Mansfield Rock Choir then entertained the crowds with a selection of pop and Christmas songs, followed by an appearance from Driver Dan and the pantomime characters.

More live music was provided by The Hot Shots who got the crowds singing and dancing along to a set of well-known rock and pop covers and Christmas classics.

Local Paralympic swimming stars Ollie Hynd and Charlotte Henshaw then joined all the acts on stage for the main switch-on at 4.50pm, which was followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

Mansfield District Council's Executive Mayor Tony Egginton said: "I am delighted that so many people turned out to join in the fun at the Mansfield Big Switch On event this year.

"The event is a great way of getting everyone into the Christmas spirit. I hope that everyone will continue to enjoy the lights in Mansfield by doing their Christmas shopping locally and supporting businesses in Mansfield town centre.

"I would like to thank the Christmas lights committee, our sponsors and Mansfield District Council staff for all their hard work in putting this festive event together."

The event was organised by the Mansfield Christmas Lights Committee, which includes Mansfield District Council, Mansfield BID, Four Seasons Shopping Centre, Mansfield 103.2 and the Chad, and our supporting partners 6 five 2s Taxis, The Hostess restaurant, Queen Elizabeth Trust, Bowring Transport and Dijitul.
