Career and advice days are great success

Crowds of people turned out for two career and advice days held in Mansfield and Sutton in Ashfield.

Mansfield and Ashfield District Councils, West Notts College and Job Centre Plus joined forces to organise the days, which were held at the Mansfield Library and Sutton Centre Community College.

Around 140 people attended the Mansfield event and 190 turned up at Sutton. Ten people were offered immediate employment with Sports Direct at Shirebrook and started work on either the same day, or the day after. A further ten recruits were registered to start at a later date.

Angela Hadley, from Blue Arrow recruitment agency which recruited the ten employees on behalf of Sports Direct, said: "Blue Arrow found the Career and Advise days in Mansfield and Ashfield to be extremely useful. We attended these days as part of our recruitment campaign for one of our local clients and managed to capture candidates throughout the course of the day which are now consequntley working for Blue Arrow. We will definitely be interested in taking part in this type of event should they arise in the future."

The career and advice days gave people the opportunity to find out about:

  • apprenticeship opportunities
  • new career pathways
  • starting up a new business
  • volunteering opportunities
  • retraining
  • interview skills, CV guidance and job applications

Cllr Kate Allsop, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration at Mansfield District Council said: "The current economic climate means the job market is extremely competitive and these career and advice days aim to give local people best possible chance to secure employment and stand out from the crowd.

"I'm thrilled that each of the events were so well attended and that some even went onto secure employment as a result of attending."

Cllr Steve Carroll, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Culture and Housing at Ashfield District Council, said: "I echo Cllr Allsop's comments and would add that it is great to see the two Councils working together to organise these events."

It is hoped similar events will take place in both Districts again next year.
