Have your say on Shopmobility

Views are being sought on proposed changes to Mansfield District Council's Shopmobility scheme.

Shopmobility enables members with mobility difficulties to hire a self-propelled or battery operated wheelchair or scooter to travel around the town centre.

The service currently operates from 9am to 4pm on Mondays to Saturdays but a recent review identified inefficiencies and changes were proposed in order to protect its long-term viability.

In May, Shopmobility members were asked for their views on proposals to close the service at 1pm every day and for it to close all day on either Mondays or Saturdays due to less demand.

Feedback from the 31% of members who responded, concluded that 1pm was too early for those who wanted to stay in town for lunch. Members also said that it should remain open on Saturdays to cater for those who could not get into town during the week and for those who wanted to shop with friends and family.

Following consideration of these comments, the new proposals are:
1) to open the service on Tuesdays to Saturdays from 9am until 2pm, and
2) to close the service on Mondays.

The planned changes would come into effect from 1 April 2013 with a new pricing structure that would include a fixed daily rate of £3.50 (currently £3.50 for three hours) and an option to pay £20 a month by direct debit for unlimited use (subject to availability and prior booking).

Councillor Kate Allsop, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration said: "We've already asked members of Shopmobility for their views and as a result have amended the proposals. It is important that as many people as possible comment on the latest proposals, so we can make sure this vital service meets the needs of our customers and provides value for money. Even if you do not currently use the service, we are still interested in hearing your views."

To comment on the two proposals above, you can submit your comments online at or email Pat Parrott at or write to Pat Parrott at Civic Centre, Chesterfield Road South, Mansfield, NG19 7BH.

Anyone can comment on the two proposals, you do not need to be a Shopmobility member or affiliated to any group. The deadline for comments is 12 November.
