Runners hail first parkrun a huge success

The first parkrun event in Mansfield on Saturday was a huge success and far exceeded expectations with 61 runners taking part.

Danny Norman (the UK Communications Manager from parkrun) was the first to finish, setting the course record at 17:09 in the free, 5km, timed run at Manor Park on Kingsley Avenue, Mansfield Woodhouse. The weekly run takes place on Saturdays at 9am. A total of 19 volunteers helped to make the event run smoothly and the runners gave lots of positive feedback.

Mansfield District Council is working alongside its partners Nottinghamshire County Council, The Manor Academy and the Nottinghamshire County Council Councillors' Divisional Fund to hold the Manor Park event, which is only the second parkrun in Nottinghamshire.

One of the organisers, Martin Cook, from Mansfield District Council, said: "It was great to have such a fantastic number of runners and volunteers and to receive so much positive feedback at the first event. The number of participants surpassed all our expectations and the level of interest shows that people are keen to become more active and improve their health. We look forward to seeing the event grow in popularity every week."

The runs are suitable for everyone of all ages and abilities, including competitive runners wanting to use it as part of their training, casual runners who want a more structured and social run, or complete beginners who want to improve their health and physical activity levels.

All runners must register online before their first run and print a barcode which they take with them every week. This is used to record their finishing position and time.

Results are emailed post run and will be posted on the website with historical results and statistics including age group records and age-graded performances.
