Paralympic success for Mansfield Nova duo

Mansfield Nova swimmers, Ollie Hynd and Charlotte Henshaw, stormed to success at the Paralympic Games, after Ollie took gold and Charlotte claimed silver in their races at the London Aquatics Centre last night.

Competing in the SM8 200m individual Medley, Ollie (17) won a gold medal in 2:24.63, a full two seconds clear of China's Wang Jiachao in second place, while brother Sam came just outside the medals in fourth.

Charlotte Henshaw won silver in the SB6 100m breaststroke and was just three hundredths of a second from taking gold, which was won by Ukrainian's Viktoriia Savtsova.

The Mayor of Mansfield Tony Egginton said: "Both races last night were astounding. We are immensely proud of all of our athletes and they are truly inspirational.

"Both Ollie and Charlotte train with the Mansfield Nova Squad and although Sam is away at university his swimming roots are also here in Mansfield. Their success will have a lasting impact and I'm sure will inspire the next generation to follow suit."

Sam Hynd, Ollie Hynd and Charlotte Henshaw are all successes of the Swimming Development programme provided by Mansfield District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.

A homecoming event to celebrate the achievements of our local Olympic and Paralympic athletes will be held in Mansfield Market Place on Tuesday 11 September from 6pm-7pm. There will be a Sports Village with local clubs showcasing their activities on Westgate from 4pm-5.30pm.

Rebecca Adlington, Chris Adcock, Charlotte Henshaw, Sam Hynd and Oliver Hynd will all be attending.

Dance duo Twist and Pulse, who were the runners-up in 2010 Britain's Got Talent, will take to the stage from 6pm to warm up the crowds.

The Mayor added: "We hope people from the District and surrounding areas will turn out in their thousands to show our pride and appreciation for our local Olympic and Paralympic athletes and the hard work and time they dedicate to their sport.

"The Sports Village provides the ideal opportunity for people who have been inspired by the Games to find out how they can get involved in a range of sports - maybe stars of the future will be discovered!"
