Get set for athletes' homecoming

Plans are being made for a homecoming event to celebrate the success of our local Olympic and Paralympic athletes on Tuesday 11 September.

People from across the District and surrounding areas are encouraged to come along and celebrate the achievements of Mansfield's own London 2012 double bronze medallist Rebecca Adlington, along with Charlotte Henshaw, Sam Hynd and Oliver Hynd who are all set to compete in the London 2012 Paralympic Games starting on 28 August.

Team GB Olympic badminton player, Chris Adcock, who spent time growing up in Ravenshead, has also been invited to attend.

The event will be held in Mansfield's Market Place from around 6pm, where the athletes will take to the stage, while a big screen will show each of the athletes competing in the London Games.

There will be Olympic-themed activities in the town centre to keep the crowds entertained and 1,000 flags will be given out.

Local sports teams and clubs will be invited to attend a sports village, where people who have been motivated to get in to sport can find out how they can get involved.

Executive Mayor Tony Egginton said: "This homecoming event provides the ideal opportunity for everyone from the District and the surrounding area to come together to celebrate the achievements of our local Olympic and Paralympic athletes and show our pride and our appreciation for all their hard work and dedication.

"Hopefully the Games will inspire the next generation of athletes and the event will give them the opportunity to find out how to get involved in a range of sports and activities at the sports village."

Further details about the event will be released within the next few weeks.
