Work experience programme is a positive step

The Council's work experience programme in partnership with Jobcentre Plus is proving to be a success in helping people to build up the skills they need to get back into the workplace.

Set up as a pilot scheme with the Jobcentre Plus Employer Engagement team, the Enhanced Work Experience Programme offers Jobseeker's the opportunity to gain work experience with Mansfield District Council for up to two months.

So far, the programme has provided several business administration placements across the Council and one placement in the Council's Parks department.

People taking part in the scheme receive a taster session before they commit to the placement, followed by a full induction. Assistance is also given with building up interview skills and finding work.  Participants are still able to claim their benefits whilst working on the programme.

The Council is taking part in the scheme as part of its Pathway to Work strategy, which is designed to maximise work opportunities for people within the local economy.

As part of the programme, Gavin Rogers completed an eight week business administration placement in the Council's legal team. He said: "I'd been unemployed for two years, so this placement was a great opportunity for me to update my office skills and catch up with the new IT software. People were very happy to help me and I learnt a lot. It was good being part of an office environment and getting involved."

Gavin is now helping out in the Council's Elections Department for two weeks on a voluntary basis, which he hopes will lead to a temporary paid role in the Department.

Portfolio Holder for Corporate Issues, Councillor Andrew Tristram, said: "This programme helps people seeking work to gain real skills, knowledge and abilities through a work placement to boost their chances of gaining sustained employment."

To be eligible for the Enhanced Work Experience programme, claimants must have been unemployed for at least 13 weeks and claiming Jobseeker's Allowance with little or no recent work experience. If you are a Jobseeker and would like to know more, speak to your Jobcentre adviser.
