New water features make a splash at Water Meadows

The second stage of refurbishment works to enhance the services offered at Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Complex is due to start on Monday 9 July and will be ready in time for the summer holidays.

The new features include:

  • Pirates ship
  • Tipping buckets and spray showers
  • New toddler slides
  • Interactive water play boards

The additional features are designed to add more interaction and excitement into the leisure pool in addition to the current larger features of the water slides, waves and water cannons.

There will be something for everyone to enjoy, but especially the younger age groups with their own slides and water play features designed to introduce children to water. Water safety it is an important life skill and when children are introduced to water from a young age it helps develop their confidence in water. The Olympics are just around the corner meaning more children will want to emulate their swimming sport stars and parents will want their children to swim the sooner we have them in the water the better swimming stars of the future we will develop. Water Meadows already run three parent and toddler sessions a week on Monday and Wednesday 9.30am to 10.30am and on a Thursday 10.30am to 11.30am during school term time.

The new features will be installed during non-operating hours, however on Wednesday 11 July the leisure pool will be shut for the day to complete some works. However the service will be uninterrupted at any other time and the rest of the facility will operate as normal.

To celebrate the opening of the new features over the weekend of the 21 and 22 July, there will be lots of entertainment and activities planned for the weekend such as pirate characters, video dance screens and competitions.

This is the second part of programme of refurbishments planned to take place across Mansfield Leisure Centres, which are now operated by Mansfield District Leisure Trust who provide the service on behalf of Mansfield District Council. Since the partnership began on the 1May 2012, work has been carried out to remodel the reception area of Water Meadows including a new shop area and fast track entry to the facility along with a Costa Coffee Express station being installed.

The next planned programme of works include the refurbishment of both Water Meadows and Oak Tree Leisure Centre gyms with new Lifefitness gym equipment with integrated audio visual screens, redecoration and new flooring. Meden Sports Centre, Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre and River Maun Recreation Centre will also see an update in the gym areas with additional gym equipment coming out of Oak Tree Leisure Centre and Water Meadows.

To coincide with the refurbishments there will be new membership options to give great value for money and help to encourage more people to take part in sport and exercise.

Cllr Phillip Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, said: "A key part of the Council's decision to transfer the management of its leisure centres to Mansfield Leisure Trust was the ability the Trust has to continually invest into the facilities and enhance the services on offer. We have already seen a substantial amount of investment and work since the transfer in May and we look forward to continue working with the Mansfield District Leisure Trust to provide our residents, and those visiting from outside the District, with a quality experience when visiting our leisure centres."

Brian Taylor Chair of the Mansfield and District Leisure Trust, said: "This development is the first phase of a number of exciting investment initiatives that the Trust and our managing agent Serco are looking to introduce at Water Meadows. Working with a number of organisations including the District Council, our mission in Mansfield is to provide active and healthy lifestyles for all, in a safe, warm, clean, friendly, fun environment for the local Mansfield community, at an affordable cost. We aim to make the facilities a place of choice and exciting place to visit for all ages and abilities."
