Summer scheme is just the job

Young people in Mansfield have another opportunity to secure an apprenticeship while being paid to gain employability skills.

West Nottinghamshire College and its recruitment service Vision Apprentices are repeating their pre-employment programme, the 'Summer Job Shop', in partnership with Mansfield District Council.

There are 15 places up for grabs to any 16 to 18-year-old living in the district and seeking an apprenticeship within the local area.

The programme consists of workshops and activities to prepare them for employment, along with help planning their careers.  Support includes motivational tips, help creating a professional CV, mock interviews and a chance to meet employers looking to recruit. There will also be taster sessions and team-building activities designed to improve team-working, confidence and communication skills.

The two-week programme starts on Monday 2 July and runs for two-and-a-half days a week over the fortnight.  Workshops and activities take place at Mansfield Civic Centre, with taster sessions held at various employer sites. Apprenticeships on offer across local businesses include information technology, business administration, customer service, construction, horticulture, plumbing, electrical, maintenance operations, engineering and motor vehicle.

Sandra Cowley, head of employer engagement at West Nottinghamshire College and director of Vision Apprentices, said: "We are delighted to be working with the district council and local businesses on this initiative once again following the first job shop last summer. This is another fantastic opportunity for young people in Mansfield to gain employability skills, build confidence, earn while they learn and find out which career is right for them.

"Participants will have the chance to secure a permanent paid apprenticeship at the end, which is a really positive way of helping young people succeed in today's challenging job market.

"Availability is limited so those interested should apply straight away."

Cllr Andrew Tristram, portfolio holder for corporate issues at Mansfield District Council, said: "The council is committed to tackling youth unemployment within the district.  The Summer Job Shop is an innovative project which gives local young people vital skills and knowledge to prepare them for work and I am pleased we are able to offer the scheme again this year."

"This is an excellent example of organisations working together to benefit local people."

Young people aged 16-18 from the Mansfield district can apply online at www.visionapprentices.co.uk or by emailing jobs@visionapprentices.co.uk

The deadline for applications is Sunday 17 June.
