Big Splash 60k challenge is a huge success!

The national Big Splash 60k challenge (sponsored by British Gas and the Amateur Swimming Association) at the weekend was a massive success in Mansfield District.

Swimmers who took part in the challenge at the District's three pools smashed the 60,000 metre target with ease, completing a massive 242,000 metres - equal to over 150 miles.

The challenge over the weekend of 28-29 April was to try and beat Rebecca Adlington's weekly average training total of 60,000 metres.

Swimmers including members of the public, swimming lesson participants and members of the swim squad who took part at Meden Sports Centre, the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre and Water Meadows, showed that swimming as a recreational activity, sport, and healthy living activity is alive and kicking in Mansfield.

Five lucky members of the public that took part in the challenge will be entered into a prize draw to win a one-month swimming pass.

Swimming Development Officer for Mansfield District Council and Chief Coach to the Mansfield/Nova Swim Squad, Glenn Smith, said: "This has been a hugely successful event and shows that the people of Mansfield District through one activity - swimming - are trying to improve their health and wellbeing.

"I'm staggered at the total number of metres completed over the weekend which amounts to over 150 miles. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and of course I'd urge them to keep swimming as part of their daily routine."
