London 2012 countdown: GB Paralympic squad announcement

London 2012 has moved a significant step closer with the first GB Paralympic squad selections being made this week.

Ollie Hynd, from Kirkby-in-Ashfield, has been selected for London 2012 to represent his country in Paralympic swimming. He attained Paralympic qualification standards in both 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley at recent swimming trials.

Ollie, a member of Nova Centurion Swimming Squad, receives £2,012 from Nottinghamshire County Council's Shining Stars fund.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Henshaw, from Mansfield, has also had her nomination accepted, subject to IPC Swimming confirming final athlete slot allocation which will be in the coming weeks.

Chris Whitaker, agent for both Ollie and Charlotte said: "Achieving selection and accepting nomination are exceptional achievements as both Ollie and Charlotte have swum some fantastic times already this year - among the leading times this year.

"Thanks to continued support from Nottinghamshire County Council, Mansfield District Council and coach Glenn Smith and we look forward to the next few months."

Mansfield District Council's Executive Mayor Tony Egginton said: "I am thrilled for Charlotte and Ollie. Mansfield can be extremely proud of the fantastic achievements of our swimmers and both have our full support."

Coun John Cottee, Cabinet Member for Culture and Community, at Nottinghamshire County Council said: "Warm congratulations to Ollie and Charlotte on this news - theirs are fantastic achievements which is great news for the county."
