Changes to road maintenance arrangements

Residents in Mansfield, Ashfield and Broxtowe are to get a new number to call to report highways problems.

From Monday, April 2, they will join the rest of Nottinghamshire in being able to call just one number - 08449 80 80 80.

From next month, the County Council will be taking highways services from Mansfield, Ashfield and Broxtowe districts under its wing, providing a more coherent, joined-up service for the entire county.

Highways staff who currently work for the districts affected will transfer across to the County Council. The teams will be based at the new £8.6m depot in Bilsthorpe along with Broxtowe Borough Council's Kimberley depot and Ashfield District Council's Station Road depot.

The transfer of highway services back to the county has been based on efficiency and this of course was paramount when looking at locations.

The changeover means that residents across the county, including those in Mansfield, Ashfield and Broxtowe, will also use the same number - 0300 500 80 80 - for things such as:

  • applications for skip permits
  • applications for scaffolding, hoarding and advertising board licences
  • applications for pavement cafe licences

The other change as far as the public is concerned is that, from April, they will no longer have to pay the County Council to install a dropped kerb for access outside their home.

Instead, they will be able to employ their own contractor at competitive market prices, via a simple licence system.

The cost of the licence will be £50 per application. Customers will still be able to obtain a quote from the County Council to do the work if they wish but the move is expected to provide around £500,000 of work for local contractors.
