Mansfield's Summer Job Shop shortlisted for national award

A pioneering project, which gave school leavers in the Mansfield District a unique opportunity to find a job while being paid to learn, has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

The Summer Job Shop has been shortlisted in the Economic Development category of the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards 2012, which rewards the very best in Local Government and recognises the excellent service that Councils deliver.

The project was held over a three-week period during the summer holidays and supported 58 young people through career workshops. Its aim was to break the cycle of unemployment, raise their expectations and aspirations and develop skills to prepare them for employment.

Funded by Mansfield District Council's Working Neighbourhood Fund and delivered in partnership with Vision West Notts and its recruitment service Vision Apprentices, along with local employers and Union Learn, the Job Shop has seen fantastic results. Of the 58 young people who took part, half secured employment opportunities and others alternative educational routes. Five of these have gone on to secure apprenticeships with the Council, working within its housing maintenance team.

Cllr Andrew Tristram, Portfolio Holder for Corporate Issues at Mansfield District Council, said: "We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this award. The Council, Vision West Notts and Vision Apprentices have a strong track record of helping young people into employment. This innovative project has given young people a great opportunity to build on the skills that employers are looking for."

Sandra Cowley, Head of Employer Engagement at Vision West Notts and Director of Vision Apprentices, said: "The Job Shop was a pioneering scheme that has made a positive difference to the lives of many young people in the district. It was such a success that we're now planning to repeat it later this year. It's a real honour to be in the running for this prestigious award - to win it would be fantastic."

There are nine short listed Councils in the category and the winners will be announced on 14 March 2012.
