Strike up the band in Carr Bank Park

Work has started on a new bandstand which will become the musical heart of the historical Carr Bank Park in Mansfield.

The Edwardian styled bandstand will be used not only for traditional brass band and musical performances but for drama performances and more contemporary musical acts.

Early maps of the park show that a bandstand used to exist in the park between 1919 and 1956. The only evidence of its existence is a hard stand, which is the current location for the war memorial.

The new site for the bandstand is centrally located within the park, acting as a central focal point for visitors.

The design is based around key criteria for the vision of the structure derived from visits by council members and officers to existing band stands in the surrounding area. Its frame is currently being made out of steel and aluminium by the Andy Thornton Architectural Metalwork Division. It is expected that the bandstand will be finished and installed by late January to early February, weather permitting.

The 8.5m octagonal bandstand and associated groundwork will cost £183,000 and has been funded by section 106 monies from developments nearby.

An official opening ceremony will take place in the spring - further details will be available soon.

Cllr Philip Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, said: "I am very excited about this project as not only are we re-creating history by bringing a bandstand back to the park but are also providing a platform for local music and drama groups to showcase their talents and entertain everyone who visits the park.

"This project is a great way of developing Carr Bank Park and adding an interesting focal point that people can congregate round and enjoy a wide range of entertainment."

Local ward councillor Christine Smith, who has been actively pursuing the installation of a bandstand on Carr Bank Park, added: "People have been promoting a bandstand on the park for some years, as they remember the events which used to take place and they enjoyed. I am delighted Car Bank Park will be once again graced by this wonderful structure."
